Bedford S-type, 1951-60 (don't know when new grille started). |

OK I had intended commenting on the trucks listed as the S type MkII with the new chromed outline to the grille. Its common for these to be known as the S type but Bedford actually renamed it the C type ('TC') in line with the D type ('TD') and later 'TK'. It was used from 1957 to 1959 and was officially the C type which replaced the S type. The difference being I believe a GM-Bedford engine was fitted (in the same way the A type normal control truck became the D type truck but for only about a year). C7SS with a Bedford 4.93 litre (300 cu in) 6 cylinder diesel engine. The 'Diesel' badge is just visible on the cab front. There was also a 3.52 litre (214 cu in) petrol engine. -- Last edit: 2018-01-04 11:23:52 |

Any chance it's a Stobart livery? |

Eddie Stobart first went into business in the 1960s as an agricultural contractor according to the website. So some years after the movie. -- Last edit: 2011-09-26 12:49:30 |

I find your research most inspiring @Sunbar I put it to you that the C type was built between 1958 and the TK coming in in 1960 - because I can't find any other evidence. Possibly to quickly give a forward control truck based on the A / D chassis because of competition. I've been trying to find any evidence of the period that the Bedford C types were actually built. The A was built from 1953 to 1957. - see Link to "vauxpedianet.uk2sitebuilder.com" The D (new, all Bedford designed diesels) replaces A from 1957 to 1958 The S type from 1950 or 1952 to 1960 - replaced by TK The RL from 1952 to 1969 - Replaced by M type) The TK from 1960 to 1987 - Chassis Designation changes from E (4x2) to S (for Special) when TL (D) launched 1980. The TL from 1980 to 1987 - Supposed to be TK replacement, but MOD continue buying in quantities - see MERLIN. Sadly, there are copious amounts of brochures and price lists that have been scanned as jpeg PDFs rather than File PDFs, so become illegible when zoomed into. There are pricelists from 1953 and 1957 which mention The big Bedfords, but don't mention Forward control. See the Vauxpedianet link shared above. You need to scroll down the long page. This TC and TJ manual is dated 1958. ![]() Pricelists from the 1960s show that the R type remain available through the 60s, but no mention of S. |

@Sunbar: The 1.000.000th Bedford is visible on the 12th sheet from bottom Link to "vauxpedianet.uk2sitebuilder.com" (May 28th 1958). |
