I rather thnk its a mid 80's Mercury Grand marquis

I see features both ways.

In support of it being a Crown Victoria, note the wide bright metal band over the roof. The Grand Marquis had a wide vinyl band in this position bordered by 2 narrow chrome bands.
Also, that looks like a rear side marker rather than a wrap-around taillamp, also pointing toward it being a C.V.

On the other hand, the Grand Marquis had a black paint stripe within the wide chrome lower door moulding as does the photo'ed car.

I think this is very likely a Crown Vic with Grand Marquis lower door trim.

Side mirror style indicates post-'80.
Rear bumper is of the pre-'88 variety.

Listing as 1981 as first year of the possible 1981 to 1987 range.

It looks very much like an LTD CV to me, especially when looking at the rear trunk lines.

But CV's were introduced in 1983, so it can't be a '81? If '81, just LTD.

No.
The "LTD Crown Victoria" designation was introduced for 1980, replacing the "LTD Landau" trim line.
"LTD", standing alone, continued as a lower cost version until the mid-sized LTD arrived for the 1983 model year.
At that point, the full-sized line cars were all "LTD Crown Victorias".

Correct me if I'm wrong Commander but I recall reading or seeing somewhere that for the 1980 models the Crown Victoria was just a trim name and that it wasn't until the 1981 models came out that the entire name formally became "LTD Crown Victoria."

Well, I guess the MODEL was LTD.
Don't have my NADA Guide with me but as I recall, there was an LTD S, LTD and LTD Crown Victoria for 1980 plus the wagon lines.
