Indeed, very nice specimen. ![]() Has part-time shift-on-the-move four-wheel drive. This revolutionary 4x4 system included a two-speed dual range transfer case that was fully synchronized with the transmission. The rounded-line pickups/utilities could now be shifted from two-wheel drive to 100 percent, fully locked four-wheel drive at speed of up to 25 mph (40 kph). The front and rear prop shafts were automatically coupled. -- Last edit: 2011-05-18 19:42:26 |

Have I already said, that Custom Deluxe is strange name for low leel trim? |

Despite being low level, you could still select a laundry list of optional extras to make the Custom Deluxe well appointed. There would be some features that would not be available however. |

I think you get what I want to said. While names like "Silverado" or "Cheyenne" can be applied to any trim level, "Custom Deluxe" is a strong clue itself. |

Originally, Chevrolet used the name Custom for their lower-trim models. However, Ford also used the exact same name for their own lower-trim models so I think that partly because of that, Chevrolet might have gone with a modified name for their lower-range trucks. Although the name might sound silly given the circumstances, at the time the name Custom implied lower-range models. |

Custom and Custom Deluxe were used together for ’73 and ’74. 1973-1974: Custom, Custom Deluxe, Cheyenne, and Cheyenne Super 1975-1981: Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, Cheyenne, and Silverado 1982-1987: Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Silverado |

Eliminating Custom Deluxe would have made more sense, but I still think that commonality with their Ford counterparts may have played a part. Do you know for sure Neptune? |

Well, using Custom Deluxe as more upscale level, than base trim, certainly made sense. |

@ ford_guy I don’t know why GM swapped and switched the trim levels, but similar names with Ford could have played a role in that. I would certainly not disagree with that statement. |
