That is 1966 Chevrolet Impala without the side trim. -- Last edit: 2010-09-11 03:07:42 |

Most police cars were based on low-level models, like Biscaynes. I'm guessing this isn't a legit cop car, but rather am Impala restored as a cop car, in which case the side trim would be removed to make it more closely resemble a Biscayne. |

I don't know, how it's in the USA, but in Germany I've seen sometimes police-cars in non-official sold versions. Basic trim-lines, but with stronger engines inside, so combinations, which weren't available for regular customers. One time, in a VW-garage there was a total basic VW Passat Variant [35i], by the trim-line it should not have more than 90hp - but it had a G60-16V-turbo-engine inside. ![]() |

Here in the USA, and other contributors need to chime in, it would depend on the year, make, and model. I'll use Chevrolet as an example, and best I know, in the late 1970s on the downsized Chevrolet sedans, a buyer could order "the police package" by checking "9C1" on the purchase form. That being said, the engine itself on an 1977 to 1979 Impala wasn't anything that was restricted to law enforcement. Best I know that the cops could only go to the 5.7 litre. But fast forward to 2011, Chevrolet offered a new Caprice PPV package in the USA (the imported Holden Caprice WM) that was sold only to law enforcement agencies. This being the USA, there seems to always be a way around rules....if you had enough money, I'm sure a dealer could make "an arrangement" to acquire a new one. And as the Wikipedia article on this car states as I try to be as accurate as possible with these details, customers could get them as dealer demonstrators, technically "new" as they have not been registered to an owner, but "used" in the literal sense of having more than just delivery miles on the odometer. Another example was "excess dealer stock". My perception that this manufacturer rule was only to make this "exclusive" to law enforcement so they would feel reassurance in the perception of having a car the public did not, and an edge on some motorists in a chase. If a dealer threw in an extra into an order from a department, and then sold the car to someone, it went around GM's policy, and GM would look the other way if they even knew about the extra sale. Offhand, I cannot think of a Ford, Chrysler, or GM police vehicle that was more than upgraded suspension, cooling, brakes, etc. The Mustang SSP had such upgrades plus some weight saving designs incorporated into it. California Highway Patrol along with the Los Angeles Police were closely involved with the manufacturers in ordering for their huge fleets, and were able to make certain demands, but nothing like putting an LS1 Corvette engine into a Nova type of situation, at least officially / from the factory. |
