They were firstly imported between 1971 and 1972 by Motorest company. Later and after a long while without such imports, Bepi Koelliker imported the 1976 Zaz 968A (and later the 968M) between the spring of 1976 untill about 1981 or 1982... Koelliker imported also Moskvitchs and Volgas since Autumn 1976 but for a shorter period. Zaz were in 1976 (not in 1971) the cheapest car in Italy (cheaper than the Fiat 126) and the ads pointed out this aspect a lot, but soon the Za acquired a very bad reputation about handling, quality and rust (in the period in which we apparently didn't care so much about Alfasuds, 127s and other rusty Italian cars). The Zaz bad aspects affected a lot The NSU Prinz 4 reputation in Italy, where there were many of this German small car, whose quality was very good, but affected in the people mind by that one of the similar in aspect russian car. Both car soon became sinominous of "unlucky people cars". |

Well, the side "ears" (engine bay air intakes) indicates 1972-1975 ZAZ 968. ZAZ 966 should have longer "ears". ![]() |

Still at DDR-times I've heard the joke there: "What's the difference between a Sapo and AIDS?" - "None. If you have it, you'll never get rid of it". ![]() In the DDR it was the only car, you get get as brandnew without waiting many years for delivering. And it had a low value as a used car, which was also uncommon there. Due the big problems with new cars, even COMECON-products (not to think about Western cars) used cars were incredible expensive in the DDR, usually with higher prices than new ones. |
