It's a Sedan DeVille but my question is if it's a Hardtop or a regular sedan with B pillar (see 1st. thum.) |

My favorite year for Cadillacs! I think it's a hardtop. Most of those 70's Cadillacs were hardtops. -- Last edit: 2009-08-25 15:10:53 |

Vehicle role should be 3 stars. |

It's a hardtop. Cadillac did not build a true sedan (with a "B" pillar) from model years 1957 until the 1976 Seville, exclusive of the series 75/Fleetwood limo line. |

Cadillac did in fact build sedans with "B" pillars from 1965 through 1970 (Calais, de Ville and Fleetwood Sixty Special) and from 1971 through 1976 (Fleetwood Sixty Special). You may be referring to the fact that they did not have window frames as did most traditional sedans. http://www.gmphotostore.com/1965-Cadillac-Calais-Sedan/productinfo/53218176/ http://www.adclassix.com/a3/71cadillacfleetwood.html -- Last edit: 2009-08-26 05:47:45 |

You are absolutely correct, Car Nerd, and I stand corrected. By "true sedan" I should have specified "B" pillars AND fixed window frames. (Back in the '70's, the auto industry often referred to cars with "B" pillars but no window frames as "pillared hardtops".) -- Last edit: 2009-08-26 18:16:48 |

Please don't stand on my part ![]() I do agree with you about the terminology. Ford was a big proponent of the term "pillared hardtop"...quite the oxymoron! -- Last edit: 2009-08-26 23:16:57 |

I think the idea was: hardtop style with the added safety of a "B" pillar. (Would a car with fixed window frames but no "B" pillar be a "pillarless sedan"? I seem to recall GM may have built a few models with that design back in the early 60's) |

Yes, especially GM [A (RWD)] platform on 1973/77 series where they have fixed pillar with frameless windows on the door. |

No, I'm talking about the reverse - fixed frames but NO "B" pillar. |

I can't recall a single model with fixed frames and no B pillar. Maybe I'm just not understanding the concept. Can you give me an example? |

I have never seen one but my October 1964 NADA Used Car Guide lists the following models for the 1963 Buick Electra 225: Sedan 4D model 4819; Sedan 4D (Pillarless) model 4829; Hardtop Sedan 4D model 4839; Hardtop Sport Coupe 2D model 4847 and Convertible 2D model 4867. Note the 3 different 4-door listings. (The 1964 Electra listings show the same 5 models/model numbers.) |

I see what you're getting at. There was a Six-window pillared sedan (with window frames and B-post), a six-window hardtop sedan and a traditional 4-window handtop sedan (both without window frames and B-post). |

I would like to see photos of the 3 different styles to compare them! |

I did some research online but if you'd like to share them with the rest of us that would be great. |

No, I don't have such photos, but would like to see them if any exist. Here is a link to Buick models for 1964. Note the "Pillarless Sedan" in the Electra 225 section. Link to "74.125.113.132" |

Oh sorry, misread your last post. Here’s what I’ve been able to find: Here’s a 1963 4-door/six-window pillared sedan - http://www.electra225.com/owners/Dave-Kerr-63.html Here’s a 1963 4-door/six-window hardtop (pillarless) sedan - http://www.hubcapcafe.com/ocs/pages01/buic6302.htm Here’s a 1964 4-door/four-window hardtop sedan - http://www.v8buick.com/showthread.php?p=1457351 -- Last edit: 2009-08-29 00:45:34 |

Good job, Car nerd. I think that settles the matter. Buick did indeed offer 3 kinds of 4-door cars in '63 and '64 in the Electra 225 series.. Nice photos, too! Looks like it comes down to "B" pillars and number of side windows! (Since I have a penchant for true 4-door sedans, I really like that black '63 with the white top) -- Last edit: 2009-08-29 01:47:41 |
