SJW 540S registration originally applied to one of the 60 TR7 Sprint prototypes/pre-production batch (fitted with Dolomite Sprint 16v engine and intended for production; the usual explanation is a crippling strike which eventually meant the transfer of TR7 production from Speke (Liverrpool) to Canley (Coventry), but an underlying problem was an inability to get the 16v Sprint engine to meet US emissions regulations. Quote - "Four works cars bear the registrations of [TR7 Sprints] from the press garage, SJW 533S/540S/546S and 548S. SJW 533S was initially rallied as a 4 cylinder 16 valve car, and later as a V8 3.5 Litre TR7 V8 specification. The other three were only ever campaigned as TR7 V8s. However, it is unclear whether the four rally cars bearing these registrations actually were, in any real sense, the TR7 Sprints from the press garage, or if only the registrations were used." - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Triumph_TR7_Sprint . SJW 540S was a November 77 plate and works car through 78 and 79 seasons. It won its debut event - 24 Hours of Ypres (Pond/Gallagher) in June 78 and its 2nd appearance was 1978 Manx rally - another win for Pond Gallagher with #5 as shown here. Also 4th on 1978 RAC rally, plus several retirements on other UK national events. |
