Filmed in Canada so its ControlTrac 4-wheel-drive. Also has front tow hooks which are indicative of 4x4 models. These older Expeditions with 4-wheel-drive came standard with a Mechanical Open Front Differential and Mechanical Open Rear Differential (with a choice of final-drive ratios) Everyone knows that "open" differentials are not good for serious off-roading, and as a result the Expedition could be optioned with a Mechanical Limited-Slip Rear Differential (with a choice of final-drive ratios) However, that still left the open front differential, which would misbehave during off-roading. If the left or right front tire of the Expedition lost complete traction or became airborne, it would begin to slip (free spin) Torque follows the path of least resistance and a wheel that has lost complete traction or has become airborne offers no resistance. Without some form of torque control or limiting of a wheel’s rotational speed difference, most of the engine’s torque would run to the slipping wheel causing it to spin uncontrollably and leaving the opposing wheel (which still had traction or was still grounded) helpless. -- Last edit: 2009-09-20 03:06:06 |
