![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Does any one knows this Racing Circuit (Raststätte AVUS ?) ...There is an accident not "made for movie" I guess, that might be real race -- Last edit: 2009-04-21 08:29:10 |

Nowadays, AVUS is part of the motorway to Berlin, coming from South-West, It was built in 1921 as 'Automobil-Verkehrs- und Übungs-Straße' ('automobile traffic and try-out/training way') as Europes very first motorway only to be used by cars. The Raststätte (built in 1937) at the northern end still exists (Motel AVUS), and also there is still a grandstand for spectators of car races. Cf. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/AVUS In 1959 there was a deadly accident at the north turn banking, which was demolished in 1967. I guess the race cars are from 1959 footage. -- Last edit: 2009-04-21 10:46:31 |

Interesting ![]() But in fact the accident of Jean Behra (well known at his time) doesn't match with these pictures. It says, on a wet track he losed control of his car and hits a pylon , and died immediatly. And the Porsche he drove was a sport car not a F1. |

Behra was not the only driver to crash that day... someone went over the top in an open-wheeled car and survived... Racing continued at the AVUS circuit and these pictures seem to be from some time later than 1959, probably about 1965 or so. The dark blue car seen from the rear has a very unusual suspension. Rather like a late fifties style, though the car seems too slim to be from that era. It's as if someone had a big budget and made a whole bunch of cars just a bit unlike real racers, but I don't think that is the case as there would not have been the opportunity to do that on the AVUS circuit. Maybe they are a local German class? Perhaps Borgward powered? |

As I know, after the mid-50ies, there weren't many selfmade- or in little manufacturies assembled German racing cars, different than in Britain, the USA or Italy. There were some single Borgward-powered racing-cars, but it was not enough for an own class. This had changed later, when the "Formel Vau", the class for VW-based cars, was founded. |

If you had followed the AVUS more in South-West, you came to that location: http://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Checkpoint_Bravo Before 1990 you often had to stand around there: Link to "de.wikipedia.org" Pics from the 50ies: http://www.berliner-mauer.de/fotoarchiv/helwig-wilson/dreilinden/index.htm How it looks today: http://home.arcor.de/agksj/suewe/bravo.htm A really interestig place from (resp.in) the Cold War-times |

I'll say, the red car is Cooper Maserati and green one Lotus. I personally love the virtual version of the AVUS track, I have it as downloaded add-on track in GT Legends. -- Last edit: 2009-04-21 23:47:50 |

Och, Sandie, if I can be the one, I'll do it as soon as possible. (The films I'm "working" on now, are such bores.) |

I think it's solved http://www.formula2.net/F366_E70.htm NO 19 listed as Lotus 34 but IMO a small type error, meant as Lotus 35 , the 34 was an Indycar -- Last edit: 2014-01-29 02:05:48 |

Which car are we talking about - I assume the green one? How do you get #19 from the main or any other picture?? Note also the steering wheel in thumbs 2&3 looks like a Cooper logo. But given the mix of race and staged footage my hunch is to disregard the thumbs completely for ID'ing the green in main, and I'll agree yellow stripe and wheels on green was a particular Lotus livery. Also the red Cooper in main has the T72 rear suspension bar not shown on the T59 #39 film car. So a confusing mix, and you could be right but I'm not quite convinced yet. Do 64 or 65 Avus races give any other possibilities?? |

yes the green one and it''s the close up are specially filmed with different cars, for a start the other car in thumbnail is dark BLUE so not even Green !!!! well I am sure I see a 9 and its either 9 or 19 and it's really typical Lotus livery of that era for 1965 results 9 and 19 where Brabham BT 115 and 16 and no 29 the red car was a Cooper T59 but with that long suspension arm it's not a a T59 http://www.formula2.net/F365_E32.htm -- Last edit: 2014-01-29 11:13:54 |
