Seen from a window of the Victoria Hotel, just opposite to Central Station in Amsterdam. The church is the 19th century neo-baroque Sint Nicolaaskerk (Santaclaus church) by architect A.C. Bleys, 1888. Sint Nicolaas was Amsterdams patron saint, and the oldest church in town was dedicated to him. But after the Alteration in 1578 (when protestantism became the official religion) the catholics had to build a new church hidden in a normal house: 'Ons Lieve Heer op Solder' ('Our good Lord in the attic', nowadays an interesting museum). After the French occupation (circa 1800) the catholics were allowed to have their own 'real' churches again, but it took some time before they had enough money to build this. |
