This scene was a reenactment of the murder of Leslie "Les" Kane who was shot in front of his wife and kids by Raymond "Ray Chuck" Bennett and his associates, Vincent "Vinnie" Mikkleson and Laurence "Laurie" Prendergast in the bathroom of the family home at Wantirina, Victoria on the night of the 19th October 1978.

According to the police investigation into the killing of Les Kane, after Bennett and his gang, including Prendergast and Mikkleson had pulled off the Great Bookie Robbery at the Victoria Racing Club in Melbourne on the morning of the 21st April 1976, members of the Melbourne Criminal Underworld had felt that they had deserved a share of the proceeds from the robbery.

Among those were the Kane Brothers who felt that they deserved a major share of the robbery, in the time since the robbery, the tension between the Kanes and Bennett came to a head one night in late 1977, early 1978 when Brian Kane and Mikkleson had got into a brawl at a pub in Richmond where Mikkleson had bit a chunk of Kane's ear.

After hearing about the brawl and Brian Kane's ear, Les Kane had sworn retribution, prompting Bennett, Mikkleson and Prendergast to strike at the Kanes first.

It is believed on the night of the Les Kane's murder, Les, Judi and their two children had returned to their home after visiting family.

After putting the children to bed, Judi went into the main bedroom and when she turned on the light, Judi saw Bennett, Mikkleson, and Prendergast armed with silenced machine guns, after grabbing Judi and taking her to her daughter's bedroom, Mikkleson and Prendergast confronted Les Kane who was in the bathroom.

It was at that point that Mikkleson and Prendergast opened fired on Les Kane, killing him, as Kane was being shot, Bennett then reappeared in Les and Judi's daughter's bedroom with Les and Judi's son and passed him onto Judi before leaving and returning to the bathroom.

After killing Les Kane, Bennett, Prendergast and Mikkleson then dragged Les' body from the bathroom, down the hallway and out of the home to the driveway where Les' pink Ford Falcon Futura was parked and then placed the body in the boot of the vehicle before driving off with Les' body.

It was believed a fourth killer and hitman, Rodney "The Duke" Collins was outside at the time of the murder and was the one who placed Les' body in the boot of the vehicle.

In the years since the murder, Collins would later become a feared hitman in the Melbourne Criminal Underworld, named in nine murders some of which were committed during the Melbourne Gangland War.

As a result, neither his body nor his car had ever been found, it was believed that the killers had taken Les' body to a meat processing plant in Mernda, Victoria where the body was put through a meat mincer.

Immediately after the murder, Les Kane's wife, Judi with her two children had rushed over to her in-laws' house where she told her father-in-law, Reginald "Reg" Kane Sr that Les had just been killed.

With the kids at her in-law's place, she later returned to the unit with Brian Kane where he saw the blood and spent shell cases in the bathroom.

Following Les' murder, Judi had refused to speak to the Victoria Police detectives about Les' murder as she had observed the Melbourne Criminal Underworld's "strict code of silence" to a point where she had given a statement to Victoria Police Detective Chief Inspector Paul Delianis, denying that Les had been killed.

But Les' surviving brothers, Brian and Raymond "Muscles" Kane had suspected that Les' murderers would be coming after them next.

Despite this fear, Brian Kane had stayed in Melbourne and decided that his best chances of staying alive were if Les' killers were arrested and had decided if Ray Chuck was thrown in prison, Brian could attack him there and managed to convince Judi Kane to go and speak to the detectives again and tell them what had happened.

After being convinced by Brian, Judi gave another statement to Detective Chief Inspector Delianis that Les had indeed been killed, and she had seen the killers and after they left with Les' body and car, she saw the bathroom stained in Les' blood and had later stated that she later cleaned the bathroom.

As Witness Protection Programs didn't existed at the time, Delianis created his own form of witness protection and placed Judi Kane and her kids in a secure location with a senior female police officer, Detective Constable Patricia Hunter who despite warnings from one of her following detectives about the "real" Judi Kane, formed a close friendship with Judi Kane, even being nursed by Judi when she was diagnosed with leukemia.

When Patricia Hunter died, Judi attended her funeral, sitting with the high-ranking Victoria Police officials, earning her respect from the attending officers, including the detective who previously warned Hunter, even apologizing to Judi.

As the murder of Les Kane was committed in front of his wife and kids at their family home, the older criminals saw this action as a major violation of one of the "unwritten laws" that governed the Melbourne Criminal Underworld, stating that acts of violence committed against criminals in front of women and children within the confines of their own home were considered as unacceptable.
