![]() ![]() It seems Sixcyl and Stronghold missed this one (!) This is the car used by private investigator Milton Arbogast (Martin Balsam). -- Last edit: 2012-07-15 22:53:47 |

Another '59 Merc? |

Yep. Those rear fins barely visible in the main picture are pretty unmistakible. |

I agree, it's a '59 Mercury Montclair 4 door hardtop. -- Last edit: 2008-09-08 01:38:40 |

Awesome old car! Love the design and it had awesome fins & huge tail lights...also had an awesome dashboard/interior! Too bad it ended up at the bottom of the Bates' swamp...along with Arbogast. ![]() -- Last edit: 2012-07-16 01:43:12 |

Fortunately, we never see that actually happen. |

This is true! In the story supposedly that's where Norman disposed of Arbogast and his car...but it's actually never shown on film. So, in reality this awesome old Mercury (not old then) was probably spared. ![]() However, Marion's (Janet Leigh) old Ford was shown being pushed into and eventually sunk to the bottom of the swamp. But, the vehicles were really lowered and raised by a special elevator built into the swamp (which was the same swamp used in "Creature From the Black Lagoon" by the way) and in reality Marion's Ford wasn't ruined either. In fact it was kept on the lot and used for other things. Eventually it was put back on the "Psycho" set in front of the motel so tourists could see it. Janet Leigh also got to drive it again 38 years later when she played sort of a spoof of her former "Psycho" character in her daughter's (Jamie Lee Curtis) 20th anniversary reunion movie of her own scary movie series: "Halloween: H20" in 1998. -- Last edit: 2012-07-16 04:42:12 |

Good to hear the old Ford was saved. What happened to it after 1998? |

Don't know? I think it is still kept on the "Psycho" set and put out when the studio tour takes people by the Bates mansion & motel. I've seen pictures online that people have taken. But, whether it's still there or somewhere else now...not sure? |

Does it have the breezeway rear window? |

That was not offered in '59. You may be thinking of '57 and '58 Turnpike Cruisers. |
