The original brand name of "Mazda" in Japanese is transcribed "Matsuda". This is actually the family name of the company's founder, Jujiro Matsuda, quite like in Toyota's case, although Matsuda chose to use "Mazda" in exports markets, as this word means "wisdom" in the Avestan language, as exemplified by the Zoroastrian deity, Ahura Mazda ("the wise lord"). The company was actually called Toyo Kogyo for a long time until officially rebranded Mazda, and was a multi-industry conglomerate like Toyota too. I like to call cars by their Japanese names (transcripts), e.g. "Rodopesa" instead of "Roadpacer". I also like to call Mazda names, including "Maasdamer", but I don't think you would've got it... PS. Actually Toyo Kogyo was rebranded to Mazda only in 1984, when Ford took over! Toyo Kogyo was an artificial cork (sic!) manufacturer (called Toyo Kogyo Cork Co., Ltd.) when Mr. Matsuda took it over using the money he earned on weapons dealing/manufacturing -- Last edit: 2007-11-24 00:20:57 |
