I am going with a 1968 Ford Custom 500. Probably the same one that is pulling into the police station parking lot in another photo. |

This scene was a reenactment of the murder of taxi driver, Paul Stine who was shot by the Zodiac from the backseat of Stine's Ford Galaxie Taxi No. 912 near the intersection of Cherry Street and Maple Street in the Presidio Heights section of San Francisco at 9:55PM on the night of the 11th October 1969. At the time of his murder, Paul Stine was attending a community college during the day where he was completing a PhD in English. On the night of his murder, Paul Stine dropped off his first fare at San Francisco Airport, when he received another call from his dispatcher to pick up a fare from a apartment on 9th Street in the city of San Francisco. As the cab approached the intersection of Geary Street and Mason Street in San Francisco Tenderloin District, Stine was hailed down by the Zodiac Killer. The killer took the keys from the cab, Stine's wallet and a piece of the victim's shirt before wiping the cab with the piece. Three teenagers who were across the street saw the killer wiping down the cab and taking off towards the Presidio Park, about a block north of the scene. They described the killer as a white male, aged between 25 and 30 years old, about 5'8 to 5'9 inches tall. Just two blocks north of the scene, San Francisco Police officers, Don Fouke and his partner, Eric Zelms were responding to the call when they observed a man walking along the footpath on the northside of the street before turning onto the stairway leading to the front yards of the one of the houses. They described the man as a white male, aged between 35 and 45 years old but didn't stop him as the San Francisco Police radio dispatcher had told all police officers that the shooter was described as a black male. The mix-up in the description was never explained. Three days later on the 14th October 1969, the Zodiac sent the piece of shirt with spots of Stine's blood along with another letter to the San Francisco Chronicle. The letter contained the threat he would shoot the tyres of a school bus out and he would shoot the kids as they would come off the school bus. Three weeks later on the 8th November, the Zodiac sent another cryptogram, Cipher 340 (as it contained 340 characters) to the Chronicle and the following day on the 9th November, the Zodiac sent a seven page letter stating that he was stopped by "two police officers" (in reference to Fouke and Zelms) about three minutes after killing Stine at 9:58PM but was let go after hearing the false description of the killer. On the 20th December 1969, the Zodiac sent another piece of Stine's shirt to lawyer, Melvin Belli and a letter stating that he wanted Belli to help him. 51 years after being sent to the Chronicle, in December 2020, Cipher 340 was finally successfully decrypted. While it didn't reveal the Zodiac's identity, Cipher 340 revealed another misspelt message taunting the investigators, stating that he wasn't afraid of being captured or death, the message stated that he had enough "slaves" (in reference to his victims) to take to "Paradise" with him if he was captured and sent to the gas chamber or killed. In an attempt to make the Zodiac give himself up, the San Francisco Examiner had warned Zodiac through their newspapers that he was the "most hunted and wanted man in the State of California and in the US" and offered that they were willing to get him legal and medical assistance and allow him to tell his story. Despite this, the Zodiac didn't respond to the Examiner's request. In the weeks after Paul Stine's murder, Paul's brother, Joseph Stine went to the papers and had appealed to Zodiac by offering himself as bait. In a statement, Joseph Stine had stated that the Zodiac was "a coward", Stine had further stated that he was both a former US Army and Air Force combat veteran who stated that he could "take the Zodiac down" without hesitation. Stine even stated where the garage in Modesto that he worked at was and what his daily routine was in an attempt to lure the Zodiac out. After this attempt, the detectives appealed to the public and warned them to not to bait the Zodiac as it would not only put themselves at risk of being targeted, but it would put their community at risk of being targeted. -- Last edit: 2024-07-27 10:50:21 |

It's a bit late, but nevertheless. I have seen this car in person yesterday. It's a Galaxie 500 (taxi clone) |

The actual cab was a 1968 Ford Custom, and is fairly accurate to what's depicted in the movie, other than being damaged from a previous accident on the front fender and driver's door, and having a Chevron advertising billboard on the trunk. |
