No way this is a 1971! My brother had a 1971(plus I remember the difference), and this sucker's a 1972! -- Last edit: 2007-06-24 00:44:23 |

Agree,1972,'cause that grille(inspired by Ford trucks of LN-Series)lasted only a year, before to be replaced in 1973 by the point-nose-grille Torinos(lookalikes that used in "Starsky & Hutch") |

It´s definately a 1972. I wasn´t sure when I entered it, and went searching, it was soon evident that i was a 72 but I couldn´t find enough evidence if it was a Gran Torino Sports or not. The Sports seem to have a stripe or some chrome trim on the sides, maybe there even was a more basic trim level? The Gran Torino Hardtop seems to have a different roof. Anyway, I got interupted while doing this and forgot to correct the modelyear. I beg your pardon ![]() |

Yes, it is a Sport model. Easiest way to tell is the factory hood scoop. |

At various points during the chase, headlights get broken, magically repair themselves, and then break again and then one headlight repairs itself. And the crumpled front wings after the ferry jump straighten themselves and then get damaged again. So more than one car. But it's a great chase. -- Last edit: 2012-03-06 16:27:24 |

Wouldn't you say that the frame bent at the firewall? -Kurt |

I rewatched this movie couple of days ago, a realy tightened plot, well put together. A shame it's not known very well. Anyway, they must have been used 2 or 3 Gran Torinos. The frame got bent a little bit first time when Talbot gets off the road and jumpes over a mound into gravel. The frame bent when hitting the ground floor of the ferry (but later in the chase repairs itself, as do headlights etc.). I wonder if the one after the ferry jump was still running by itself or if they had to help along, cause they used this one later in the beach scene, where it was crushed again. And for a sports car back than, it seems to have a much better ground clearance then some SUV's today ![]() ![]() |

The one used for the ferry jump appears to already have a slightly buckled front before the jump...probably the same one used for the gravel pit. In other words, a dedicated jump car may have been used. |

This is model 63R - Gran Torino Sport "SportsRoof" (Ford's term for fastback). The Gran Torino Sport was the only model with the fastback body style. The hoodscoop is another item that only cam with the GTS. |

For some reason, Newman's 'John Talbot' not included in imdb's list of characters with that surname. Perhaps any picture with Suzy Kendall is worth looking at, and John Vernon's a dependable heavy. Plenty of chase continuity cock-ups commented on already by concerned contributors. When Talbot alights and slams the Ford's bootlid shut the rear skirt looks fairly intact, but its torn, ragged appearance comes and goes in the chase scenes. -- Last edit: 2016-06-13 11:08:49 |

Rewatching this scene recently, I also noticed the car switches from a floor-shift automatic to a column shift at least once. |
