Howard Sommers bought these two KW's in the late 60's when he got the LAPD OPG heavy duty contract for the Valley (Continental Tow had the heavy duty contract for Central, West and South Bureaus) They were affectionately dubbed "King Kong" and "Mighty Joe Young". The wrecker bodies were built in-house, based on the Continental Tow wrecker units, which were also house built. If I recall, Tex Freeman, the owner of Continental Tow in L.A., even lent Howard Sommers a fabricator and some of his blueprints to help build these two trucks. |
