It has a South African number plate (Gauteng province, which includes Johannesburg and Pretoria). Perhaps the dealer bought it on eBay. :)

501s are 6-cylinder cars (65 or 72 bhp), except the 1955 introduced 501 V8 (95 bhp). 502s (introduced in March 1954) had more chrome (like the one shown here, under the side windows) and a 100 bhp engine. In 1955 BMW introduced the new 502 with the bigger rear window and a 3.2 ltr. engine, first with 120 bhp, later more and more powerfull, up to 160 bhp. So, this one, with the extra chrome and the V8-logo, but still the small rear window, should be a 1954 BMW 502. (I found these infos in the german magazine "Markt", April 1985.)
