I've got a book reference that only one Gitane was built. Initially with a body rather like the similarly mid-engined later Mini GTM and registered 232 HWD, then restyled as your link in a vaguely Alpine-Renault A108 shape, and disappeared about 1968. Giannini plans were apparently genuine but came to nowt. George Fowell later invented a jogging machine, which made him a fortune.

Good job George did not have to depend on Gitane GT sales :)
