Sterling was US-denomination of third model of car born by 1979-signed joint-venture of Austin-Rover with Honda(after the 1982 Triumph Acclaim and 1985 Rover 200 Series);in Europe was marketed either as Honda Legend(like the origins' car at home from which derives, since 1986)and Rover 800 Series(since 1987,from which derives Sterling--a luxury brand chosen by Rover for US-market--in fact was marketed there as Sterling, not Rover Sterling as could be supposed). Sterlings lasted in USA thru 1988-1989 circa(later US-spec becomes Rover 827,and Sterling only a luxury trim name for European Rover 800 series, either the 820 and the 827(this late with V-6 Honda engine derived by F.1 experiences of those years). PS Effects of Rover-Honda ties were feel also in Australia, where thru Eighties'-Nineties'were marketed by Leyland AUS(later Rover AUS)two cars, badged as Rover, but actually locally-built masked-Hondas:one was the 1983 circa Rover Quintet,a badge-engineering of 1980 Honda Quint/Quintet(practically a sort of 5-doors-hatchback Accord);the other was the 1988 Rover 416 SE/Vitesse,otherwise a 1986 Honda Integra(sort of Accord with concealed headlights)in disguise for Aussie-market. |
