It’s a 2001 model, as indicated by the color-keyed rocker panels, lower front bumper trim and lower rear bumper trim. |

After looking at the car in closer detail, I realized it has Amber turn signals on the front and rear lamps (Clear Amber-less lamps were only offered on the 2001 models along with the body color-keyed rocker panels and lower front and rear bumper valances, here in the US) So either both the front and rear turning indicator lamps were replaced or the body color-keyed rocker panels and lower front and rear bumper valances were added. So I defaulted the year model to 1999, as that was the first year model for the dual tear drop headlamp design. |

Why so many BMW's? |
|

Product placement. BMW is very active in it. See, the "Cobra"-series, James Bond and so on. |

But why use the old model? |
|

Probably it was left over in the factory. Often new BMW's were brought for destroying by BMW itself, but sometimes also older models were included. BMW had also an own wrecking- and recycling department for cars, which shouldn't be sold further. So a time ago they had wrecked and dismantled a BMW 7-Series, formerly owned by Princess Diana. The car was dedicated to be destroyed to avoid making some hysteric marketing for a former "Lady Di"-car. The single parts were sold again (Mercedes Benz makes it in a similar way). So probably, if anyone had bought an used parts for his 7-Series at this BMW-department, he had a little chance to own one piece of Diana's car. -- Last edit: 2008-11-18 19:06:50 |

It could also be because this movie is set in 2000. |

Yes, I seriously doubt this was product placement. The movie was filmed in 2004 (the story was set in 2000) the E38 had long been replaced since then by the E65/E66 which would have already been in it's 4th model year. Also note that the 7-Series seen in the thumbnails are of varied year models. One of them isn’t even a 7-Series; it’s a 5-Series. Unlikely supplied by BMW. The props department more rather went out and gathered as many E38 7-Series as they could to make the desired time effect. |

I'm with Neptune; there would be no commercial benefit in BMW sourcing old models for the film. |

And the main picture is an i, not iL, with MPars but *without* shadowline trim. What a mess. As for watching the movie, it's currently sitting at a 29% on rottentomatoes, so it's probably not worth anyone's time. That said, if anyone has already burned up 90 minutes on that sucker, please do let us know why there are supposed to be so many 7s in there. |

I really like this generation 7 Seires, especially the extended wheelbase models. I think this generation has aged well over the years. |
