1991-1993 [TCR]. Code TCR10 is for RWD cars, TCR20 for AWD. |

See this guy knew this back in 2011. Wonder why it was never adopted ![]() Going through these now to update and fix them. The only tell-tale sign (that I have found) to tell 2WD from AWD is the front door badge. |

Probably because the codes were too specific to be used with total accuracy if the only visual clues were small door badges. We have similar problems with eg Renaults, some UK Fords etc where screen captures often do not permit an exact code match, so tend to back off to the general code. Also sometimes we need to think that if we introduce a very specific system which only a handful of enthusiasts can fully understand or use properly, where does that leave the situation for 5 or 10 years ahead when those particular experts are no longer around and other folk have to deal with the legacy?? If we try to be too clever today, it will cause chaos further down the line. So sometimes simple and solid is best. |

@dsl. I should have explained myself better. Possibly even worded it differently. I should have said: "Why are most Previa blank (in the chassis)? Why are the ones Listed with [XR10]? That is part of the diesel code for the Estima Lucida and Estima Emina not the Estima/Previa. The full size Estima(Previa outside Japan) was never offered in a diesel motor. [XR10] is part of the diesel chassis number so that is not correct either. I see itvon Wikipedia but they are edited by people and can be wrong. Here is the site breaking down the chassis: http://zenseeker.net/Previa/PreviaMaintenance-EngineCodes.htm [TCR] is the most common used. [CXR] is the diesel code. The 10,11,20 &21 after the code mean how man seats (7 seating or 8 seating) and which drivetrain (RWD & AWD/4WD). I agree with a generic code for future users, however we were using the diesel code for all of them when in reality only the two JDM narrow vans received the diesel motor. |

I'm not a Toyotologist so those are questions beyond my pay grade. But if I've understood the permutations correctly, a general usage of TCR seems safest option. If you can definitely pinpoint some 4wds, maybe TCR20 could come into play as well. I can't suggest anything useful about how the diesels could be treated, but certainly worth highlighting any definites in comments and probably extra info, which would enable them to be batched together if a different code (CXR or whatever) is confirmed. |

XR means the general chassis code. Just like the XP codes for the Yaris and assorted other small Toyotas. Or XV for the Camrys. Or XA for the RAV4. |
