And cutting edge modern for the time - it's the all-new for 1977 model. |

This is slightly bittersweet as I concur with all the favorable comments in previous posters' writings. Perhaps the B-Body GM cars just represent a noticeable shift during my childhood towards the next decade of the 1980s. These cars were extremely popular vehicles, understandably, and represent another milestone in the decline of GM as they didn't seem to have many out-of-the-park hits of this magnitude afterwards. I like the Caprice, as well as the Parisienne (Bonneville) also seen in the series even better. I remember watching this episode in then quite contemporary times on Canadian TV when it was transmitted across the border around the time it was first broadcast there. Although obviously contrived to have the New Avengers in Canada, I found it remarkable that so many brand-spanking new cars / recently introduced models were used, including this Impala. But what really struck me as bizarre (and a bit sad), is that Gambit crashes this new Impala. Despite the shoestring budget, somehow they managed to crash a new Chevrolet. Even the Dukes of Hazard or any American detective show never did that! They'd have a ten year old stand in vehicle do the stunt, or just fake the scene / not show it. |

Follow up to my previous comment....I rewatched this episode for the first time in about 45 years, and they fooled a young me with the Impala collision, but I notice now that they do not show the impact with the van. There are obviously two Impalas used. One that Gambit commandeers from a lady when his own red TR7 is blocked in behind a box truck, and that one distinctly shows the interior as DARK BLUE, but when there is a sound of a crash, then a scene of an Impala with a crumpled front end and some slight rocking and billowing suggesting the crash just happened, the Impala here has a RED interior as seen from a top view, and a close up of Gambit resting at the steering wheel. Thank God a new Impala of this vintage wasn't sacrificed, but this was a cheap production and there was no way the producers were going to wreck a brand new car that they probably could not acquire free for publicity. |
