i think this is a replika and this is the original: http://www.dvn-berlin.de/i/agr_bus/fzb/fzb_do54_titel.jpg |

it's not really the same, front wheels are behind the front door |
◊ 2005-10-27 14:18 |
yes, a very bad fake |
◊ 2005-10-27 14:53 |
Why would they make, in 1966, a replica of a 1954 vehicle ? ![]() |
◊ 2005-10-27 14:52 |
So how do we have to classify such a vehicle ? Waggobau Bautzen Do54 (replica) for ex?... |
◊ 2005-10-27 15:21 |
Since there is already a "Waggonbau Bautzen Do54" for this movie, I would put it as additional tumbnail on the page of the "real" model. But is it sure that it could not be another similar model? |

i think this is a studioscene and is filmed in Hollywood or something place In 1966 they can't filmed in east-Germany and the most of the scenes are in west-Germany |

We should try to find the base model, if that is a mock up. We did that for the replicas (perhaps I should rather say 'look-alikes') in some Spielberg films (Indiana Jones, Saving Private Ryan). It is probably not easy, if those two images is all there is. But perhaps some old book about movies holds the clue. |

Unfortunately, there are not other pictures available in the movie. I wonder why they would have made a replica while some other scene shows a real Waggonbau Bautzen Do54... |

I was thinking that the hood may have been added to a normal double-deck bus. It would explain why the wheel is after the door and not before like it is on the Do54. The overhang is really big here... |

I guess they made a replica (if it is one) because they could not get Hitchcock and Paul Newman over the border into the GDR. I suppose the officials would not have liked them making a spy film. The shots of the Do24 and the Trabant were probably part of a documentary. All the rest was made in West Berlin, the out of town parts even in Hollywood. It is too long ago that I saw the film last, therefore I don't remember why they showd the real Do24 at all. The front of this beast looks like a Do26 (http://www.berliner-verkehr.de/busbilder/10_3.jpg), but details are wrong. The rest does not fit any of the Berlin busses. -- Last edit: 2005-10-29 01:10:28 |

Do54/56 you mean, I guess ? Well, we will label it as a "replica" then |
◊ 2005-10-29 11:48 |
The Do56 is the successor of the Do54 -- which I ment when typing 26 + 24. I am not too happy giving the credits to 'Waggonbau Bautzen'. Why not label it as: Make: unkown Model: Replica of Waggonbau Bautzen Do56. This way more users are prompted to search for the correct donor vehicle this replica is based on. |

The replica listing is still a pending problem. Shall we list them as the car they look like or the original car. Or both... If it is considered as a replica, I would list it as what it looks like. If it is a customization of another model, then I would list it as the other model. Currently there are several replicas listed as what they look like: /vehicle_7573-Hispano-Suiza-Replica.html /vehicle_2312-Lamborghini-Countach.html /vehicle_2864-Ferrari-250+GT+California.html -- Last edit: 2005-10-29 13:02:00 |

On the other hand we do have a number of replicas or mock-ups listed by the name of the base vehicle: /vehicle_928-Citro%EBn-2CV+Kubelwagen.html /vehicle_772-GMC-CCKW+353.html /vehicle_12297-KhPZ-T-34-1940.html And a number of real vehicles posing as different ones: /vehicle_12294-Bohemia-OT+810-1945.html /vehicle_11642-Cadillac-M24-Chaffee-1944.html A very prominent film replica is the Miami Vice Ferrari Daytona, which is a Corvette. A well known real replica is the Excalibur. And all those Lotus Seven replicas. As we try to be very correct with the make and model name, we should, in my opinion, give the name of the base vehicle and point out that it is a replica or film-replica (film mock-up). We could use the 'extra info' field for this information, or just write about it in the comments. |
◊ 2005-10-29 16:58 |
The info field could be used for that, yes. For example for the 2CV Kubelwagen we put Citroën 2CV in the make+model field, and "as Volkswagen Typ ?? Kubelwagen" in the extra info field. But then another question: is that really useful to list the car as it is really? A 2CV-fan does not really want to see a movie where a 2CV is not looking like a 2CV. But a VW fan may want to see this movie even if the car is not a real one... (well, in this case it sounds strange, but with the Ferrari as example it is easier to imagine ![]() |

I think it would be interesting for fans of both makes. The Citroën 2CV / Volkswagen Typ 82 'Kübelwagen' is quite a good example, as there are a lot of fans for both types. And I would say that both fan groups will enjoy seeing 'their' car, either heavily modified or as a mock-up. I personally find it very interesting to discover what lies underneath the 'artificial Hollywood masquerade'. For examples I had a good look at the Land-Rover modified to look like a UAZ (/vehicle_6079-Land-Rover-90.html). As it is difficult to find one of those impostors we could either search for names of makers in the 'extra info' field (would mean a comparison between the maker list and the contents of that field) or we add a special field for replicas and mock-ups. By the way, at the moment I don't get a result when I search for 'Kübelwagen' (or 'Kubelwagen'), even though there are some listed. Some additional information: 'Kübelwagen' is not specificly the Volkswagen Typ 82 but a type of (military) car. The word translates as 'bucket car' or 'wagon à benne'. Here is another one: /vehicle_12403-Borgward-B2000-A-O-1955.html -- Last edit: 2005-10-29 18:28:45 |

Because by default the search on model name is done on the beginning of the field. If you search for *kubel it should work (or *kübel, in the case that the German accents are not handled by current MySql settings). -- Last edit: 2005-10-30 00:40:23 |

My guess for the base vehicle would be a single-decker bus, something like a GM 'Old Look'. AFAIK there aren't any American double-decker buses with the front wheels behind the driving position. |
