Crown Imperial Ghia Limousine .It could be a 1957 or a 1958 car since all of the 36 units produced by Ghia of Torino in 1957 were already equipped with 1958 Imperial grille as seen on the picture .In 1958 Ghia produced another 31 units still with the 1958 grille, but the price in excess of $ 12000 in 1957 went up to more than $ 15000 in 1958.Crown Imperial Limousines rode on a hughe wheelbase o 149.5 inches and were powered by the 325 horsepower 392 cubic inch V8. |

I list it as Crown Imperial, I guess it´s most correct since it is marketed this way. Even if it´s very closely related to rest of the Imperials. |

Imperial is the brand name though, so I'd list it as an Imperial Crown. |

I´m willing to agree on that. There´s just a slight problem, and that is the "regular" Imperial Crown Southampton available at the same time. How to keep them apart properly in the list? I´ve found a few links over these cars and the sales brochure for the 58 Crown Imperial. They were marketed as Crown Imperials and I believe there is a point in giving them a separate brand. Check this out and let me know what you think about it: http://www.imperialclub.com/Yr/1958/ghiabrochure/ http://www.duricy.com/~imperialist/gallery/gallery57a.html http://c-i-f.ifrance.com/ghialimo_us.htm Link to "www.tocmp.com" |

The use of the designation "Crown Imperial" is incorrect in most cases. I agre with 'Phil64' that "Crown Imperial" is the designation for the "Imperial" limousine by Ghia. "Imperial Crown", on the other hand, is the correct designation for one of the three standard Imperial models built in the years 1957-1963. " Here's a great 1994 book on the Imperial models from 1955-1963, that you can get from: Iconografix, P.O. Box 18433, Minneapolis, MN 55418 / USA: ISBN 1-882256-22-0 |

So how shall we call the two Crown Imperial of the site? "Imperial Crown"? |

Right again, MrCadillac, "Imperial Crown" was the mid-level regular line and "Crown Imperial" designated the rare Ghia limousines. I'm going with 1959, the '57 would have had only two headlights instead of four and the 1960 tail fins were waaaay bigger. In any case this is one gorgeous Imperial! And thanks for those great links, DAF555 and phil64. -- Last edit: 2005-11-08 00:07:04 |

Hi Pilou, this is a 58 model for sure, whilst all Imperial limo's used the '58 grill, only the '57 models used the regular '57 year lower bumber bar ... the one in the movie has the 1958 single lower bumber with the parking lights attached. After all these years I only found that out last night (Jan 18th, 2012) |

I once owned a 1957 Ghia built Crown Imperial, and I can identify this as a '58 (as stated by 55 roadmaster). The information provided by pilou and MrCadillac is correct, as well. The proper designation for these cars was "Crown Imperial" or "Ghia built Crown Imperial", whereas the standard production series was designated "Imperial Crown". Just to keep things simple, most enthusiasts just refer to the 1955 through '65 Ghia built cars as "Crown Ghia". It's confusing, I know, but Chrysler's playing around with the names of their cars lead to something of an identity crisis for the company. As an example, in the early 50's, the designation "Newport" was given to the upscale New Yorker and Imperial Pillar-less hardtops. Later, the name "Newport" was given to the entry-level Chrysler series, miss-leading many who still associated the name with the most upscale cars from Chrysler. (Incidentally, quad headlamps were a popular option on most Imperials in 1957, although they were technically illegal in most states until '58.) |
