On the show it is very prominently referred to as a Dodge. Referred to in a derogatory way like Dodge is a loser brand. It was determined to really be a Plymouth by fans or somebody else.

Al Bundy's car is actually a 1971 Plymouth Duster playing a Dodge. The Plymouth was actually a beautiful Iceland Blue with 99,000 miles on the odometer, until the used car lot had painted Sahara Tan, and rolled back the odometer to 18,000 original miles. In the early years Dodge was rusted Grimed Sahara Tan until the car had gone through the Scott's Royal Scrub House Car Wash on an episode, and it turned out to be a beautiful shiny Tor Red which was the original color that Al remembers buying to find out the car hadn't been washed in over 20 years which had tons of dirt, grime, and dust on it. Ed O'Neill was the only member of the Married With Children cast to appear in every episode. In real life the car is actually in Ed O'Neill's private collection.

Shouldn't it get more stars? A frequent theme in the series, after all.

As jettalover notes, "Dodge" is used derogatorily, like a racial slur. But to use a Plymouth as a Dodge makes no sense. Would not "Plymouth" be just as loser-y sounding as "Dodge"?

They used a bunch of Duster's, season 4, Episode 9, he drove a blue "Gold Duster"

looks to me a 73 or 74 Duster with 70 or 71 fenders on it. The hood is a 73 up style so is the bumper.

It's a 72 Duster, because it has the big tail lights. '70, '71, and '73 to '75 all had smaller tail lights... My dad had a '72 and that was the only year the Duster had big tail lights. Also, the Duster on the show had a slant 6 engine and was repainted to red for some unknown reason.

That wouldn't have been necessary, since there was no sixth, or in some cases, seventh, digit, meaning it would have rolled over anyway.

If Al had a 340 the show couldn't rag on them.

I can tell you that three different Plymouth Duster had played Al's car on the show. The Bundys family Dodge actually appears to be a 1972 Plymouth Duster with an optional vinyl top. Therefore it's funny to hear Al say in 0917: "I don't want a Plymouth, Peg, I want my Dodge, dagnabbit!" Plymouth and Dodge are both owned by Chrysler, and both companies have models originally based on the Valiant. Therefore the car looks similar to some Dodge Darts. It is a Plymouth nevertheless. The white tail lights are wider than on the 1970 and 1971 Duster models. Also, when you take a closer look at the engine in 1020, it looks like a hi-pro 340ci 4 barral, putting out 300hp. It was Chryslers small block race engine, so it's quite the opposite of what the MwC writers make us believe about Al's car. Other "facts" from the series: in episode 0724, the Dodge was given as a 1974 model (just like the Blues Brothers' car), but in 1020 she was said to be from 1971. Even worse, episode 1107 tells us that Al had her already on the day of his 4 touchdowns triumph which was in 1966. The Dodge is brown (or bronze) (0305, 0409, 0603, 0623, 0706, 0715, 0809, 0817, 0902) even though episode 0409 tells us that she was blue until that episode. In 0917 this Dodge becomes red in a car wash (confirmed in 1005, 1107, 1109). In fact, she was red when she was new (0917, 1107). The license plate is Illinois "61 CMS 2" (0816, 1118) or "2 RPH 72" (0623). In 0409 the odometer passes 100'000 miles. In 0817 the Dodge passes one million miles, i.e. Al drove 900'000 miles in four and a quarter years. Al's car key is a screwdriver (0917). The dodge has an 8-track (0724), a late 60s to early 70s tape player.

So the blue car from E09.04 does not seem to be a Plymouth, which leaves the question what it is...

bundydodge23 DE

2016-11-30 18:14

Alright, the blue one is not a Plymouth Duster, but a 1973 Plymouth Valiant:

Then again, if the Plymouth Valiant was not available as fastback the blue one was much more likely a 1973 Plymouth Duster 340 :3 [Image: 1973-plymouth-duster-340-with-white-canopy-vinyl-top-mist-green-fvl-_2005-ww_wd-dctc_-dscn7279.jpg]

MaindrianPace, that 70-71 color code, I'm afraid, is not relevant for Al's '72. (Its not Sahara Tan, its close, though)

I know. Acquired the old Sahara Tan for my 1/25 scale model, and its not the same. :)

There is no "Sahara Tan" for '72s. There is a "Mohave Tan" in the 72 sales and specs brochere.

Not that THAT matters, as Mohave Tan is not the exact paint scheme either. Pretty sure they painted the car much later, so we have to look at paint colors up until the start of the show :O

Another dead giveaway it's a '72, the beveled center line on the trunk.

OK, the front grille is NOT the standard "Shark teeth" style. Its kinda rare on '72', more common on '73's, and in an altered version on the '74-76.

Also not the hubcaps. The base option, NOT the fancier mag style wheels seen on most '72s. The side mirror is also a base option.

CanesBart US

2017-01-15 04:44

Notice that this "Dodge" has two different interior colors? Black and tan. Has to be two different cars, both '72s.

The tan interior version had to be the one repainted red.

Also note that the black interior car has a different roof than the tan interior, and the latter's roof looks just like the red version.
