Judging from the picture, it's a 1986 or newer U.S. spec car (the headlights give it away). This means it could be a 420SEL or a 560SEL. It might also be a 300SE, SEL, SD, SDL, or 350SD or SDL, but I don't recall which 6cyl/diesel models the U.S. got after 1986 for sure, though I seem to remember the short wheelbase SEs being dropped in the US after 1985. |

I replace the main picture, and add the following extra pictures : ![]() Now it is sure that it is a 560 SEL, as it is visible several times in the movie. Old main picture was showing the Mercedes near the Yugo: ![]() -- Last edit: 2010-10-10 01:14:35 |

I should mention the man who quotes "Go fuck yourself!" is my acting teacher. His name is Jeff Driesbach. |

Used by the main characters since the second half of the movie...some good shots and aggressive driving, and then the chase with the Dodge Ram. It's really a tank! Hit somethings and was hit by the Ram but the body wasn't damaged. Ah, I forgot: It's a second series, from 1986 for USA, because the 560 SEL was available only with the restyled model, and this had the new bumpers. |

Isn't it funny how bolshy civilian bystanders can be (especially New Yorkers) in Hollywood action films? A Typical scene: Cop: Excuse me ma'am, I am a cop and I need to use this phone Woman on phone: Fuck you! |

What probably happened is they would have used various Mercs for the action sequence and perhaps not all of them were 560SELs since that was the most expensive model, so they used the slightly cheaper smaller-engined ones for other shots or when the car gets damaged. But since at least one of those cars carried the 560SEL badge, we should use that name for all of them. It's like with Tomorrow Never Dies which features the then-top-of-the-line BMW 750iL, they used about 17 cars during filming and many of these got wrecked, do you really think all of them would been £75,000 750iL's when they could have used 728i's or 735i's (which cost about half as much) for the more punishing action shots? -- Last edit: 2007-01-08 23:55:29 |

I have seen with particular attention this scene, and now I'm pretty sure that they used two W126s. A 560 SEL, which wasn't so damaged, and then a 420 SEL, that was more used and wrecked. Btw, I agree with G-Mann, also in Bond's movie weren't ALL 750iL. |

They likely had more than two. The jump sequence depicted in the main picture here, for example, likely used a special, one use stunt car. |

I liked the part where the main character 'disables the ABS' by reaching under the dash. Especially since you won't find anything ABS-related there, except for the ABS control light ![]() It is possible to disable the ABS in-car, however. A connection to the rear sensor is located under the back seats. When the connection is severed, the ABS module will automatically shut itself off. All in all, not too far from the truth, but they just picked the wrong side of the car ![]() |

Is this some typical U.S. spec car, because it has two Windscreen wiper? European version only have one "mercedes trademark" wiper? Also ABS scene was funny ! ![]() |

All W126s have that style dual wiper, on right hand drive models they swing out from the other side ![]() |

There was one scene where McClane asked Zeus if the Mercedes-Benz had any airbags and the Mercedes Benz did have an airbag but as the Mercedes-Benz they were in was a 1986 model, the airbag were fitted to the driver's side only. Mercedes-Benz started to add the passenger side airbag to their vehicles in 1988. -- Last edit: 2017-07-28 17:16:34 |

As mentioned above, several cars involved. As seen in the movie, at least: I would be surprised if not even further vehicles were used, as the style and damage level of the interior and the damages to the exterior as well seem to change from one shot to the next. |
