Incredibly rare sight of an Indonesian Ford Orion MkII, fantastic!

Yes! These exist in the country. These Orions were ex-British Police cars that were imported in 1991 through the embassy's diplomatic grant.

150 units were imported with all of them being L trims. However, they have had their engines and interiors fixed, cleaned and refitted before importation.

These cars were granted by the embassy for the 10th Summit of the non-aligned movement held in Jakarta on September 1992.

Here's a citation from Mobilmotorlama:

"The history of how this car entered Indonesia was through the opening of the Non-Aligned Movement held at Jakarta on September 1992. The British embassy granted 150 Ex-British police Ford Orion MkIIs for the Indonesian police that were 1991 L models. However, before the cars were imported, their interiors and engines have been restored and cleaned."

The Orion was not the only cars to be imported to Indonesia via the 1992 Non-Aligned Movement. These cars included:

-120 units of the HG50 Nissan President for foreign heads-of-states.

-150 units of Japanese specification Y31 Diesel Nissan Patrol GCs for security and convoys.

-81 units of the 300SEL W140s for certain special members.

-210 units of the Volkswagen T4 Caravelle for carrying staff delegations of each countries.

-Volvo 960s were used by Indonesian government members.

-TD25 engined Nissan Cedric Y31s, later repurposed as Silverbird's initial fleet. Silverbird imported more Y31s many years after the 1992 NAM.

Interesting story but I'm surprised if the Orions were really ex-UK police - I can't say they were never used, but very unusual if they were. We had squillions of police Escorts in various specs and 3/5/estate bodies but not the saloons. There may have been a few, but sourcing a batch of 150 pre-used Orion jam sandwiches doesn't sound right.

Maybe instead they ordered a batch of 150 brand new Orions, made in UK at Halewood and they were kitted out in police spec as a special batch, either on the production line or on arrival in RI??

The Orion Mk II was made from 1986 to 1990, so these cars would have been at least two years old.

Either these cars were older than claimed, or the UK police force that had bought them had a reason to dispose of them after only two years.

ETA: I didn't see dsl's comment, which was posted while I was working on mine. Perhaps they were former rental or leased cars that were repainted white in the UK in preparation for getting Indonesian police livery applied on arrival. Perhaps police lights and sirens were fitted in the UK as well, leading people in Indonesia to assume that they had always been police cars.

Sadly, there is not much information on these Indonesian Orion MkIIs as all of them truly went extinct in the country, mostly due to parts inavailability.

We also have another rare car in this listing, the Saga Iswara. While all of them have disappeared off road sightings, they still have a decent population circulatimg in the country due to the car sharing parts with the locally sold Lancer Fiore or Lancer FF and having also been sold for quite while to Citra Taksi between 1992 to 1998.

Interesting story! I already learned the Y31 Cedrics, Y60 Patrols and VW Caravelle T4s in my past activities in this site.

Also @dsl...

1. Not necessary the RI tag; given the story Lucivex provided above, Made for GB is much more applicable as these were NOT endorsed by Ford's official Indonesian distributor at the time (Indonesia Republic Motor Company), where IRMC don't sell these either. I objected the RI tag to prevent confusions from users/members with very low knowledge.

2. Not necessary Indonesian Police in the extra info; am I going to request a site feature for a variation to our existing member-specific 'Owned' special section where it instead focuses vehicles owned by law enforcements or/and fleet companies? Sure I've seen a few foreign cop cars listed in that way but let's be honest, putting them in the extra info looks too misleading and confusing.

It's better to have these tags so cases like this stand out for future reference and/or retrieval - enables any future sightings to be linked. Without the tags this is just an anonymous Orion which can easily slip below the radar and become forgotten.
