Escort Mk1 Camper with unusual dropdown tailgate. Unless it's a strange poverty hearse.

Access?? These weren't built for people who want access... Be already inside or just don't. It's an "Elba" conversion by the Dormobile Ltd. - the four-seater, three-sleeper and non-accesser motor caravan for people with a wry sense of humour.

Elba was apparently the first Escort camper launched (late 68 or very early 69), followed by the Canterbury Siesta in early 69; both were officially approved and could be ordered through Ford dealers. Other conversions then followed - Coachwork Conversions Freedom Camper (1969), C&W Conversions Nimbus Deluxe (1972).

In 1970 the Elba GT was launched, with Willment-tuned Cortina 1600 GT engine and Rostyles, and in 1973 a one-off Escort Mexico Canterbury Siesta was built by Ford AVO in Copper Brown metallic with 4-spoke RS alloys and front quarter bumpers (XVX 222L); they'd also built 3 Mexico estates and a Mexico van (although it's unclear if this van existed separately or was subsequently made into the camper).
