FLJ 655 was a Bournemouth plate issued in 1940. |

Again I don't understand these, but S&G has a picture of this exact front (with the square-ish headlights) as "P7/P8 (Plymouth/Chrysler Kew, Wimbledon". Apparently Plymouth had 2790cc, Kew choice of 2790cc and 3302cc, Wimbledon 3302cc only. Lots of different bodies on 114" wheelbase. Glass's suggests they were all Chryslers, with Plymouth, Kew and Wimbledon being model names. So "Chrysler Plymouth" is a legitimate possibility. |

It also has 1939 front. Plymouth's in 1940 looked slightly different, but I don't know what was the deal with the rebadged Chrysler models in the UK. Did they make the exact same models as Plymouth in the same year, or was there a delay of some sort in the production line to justify 1940 number plate issue ? -- Last edit: 2021-01-01 23:15:36 |

Can't really answer ^. My understanding is that pretty well all UK civilian car builds stopped in Aug/Sept 39 in lead-up to WW2. Some regulated car production continued for military use, but factories switched to commercials/military etc. So we wouldn't have made any 1940my Plymouths or Chryslers. But some 39 cars could have been trapped in showrooms to trickle out in 1940 - any civilian registrations 1940-45 are fairly unusual. |

The American manufacturers persisted throughout the 1930s trying to sell cars which were about as far as possible from the needs of the average Brit that it was necessary to use whatever tricks they had available. Trick 1 use your smallest engine. Trick 2 use your least available number of cylinders, since the British road tax, paid annually, was designed to penalise multi cylinder engines. Trick 3 sell one of your cheap models but call it by your most expensive name. Compared with the output of the indigenous companies, American cars were large, reliable, fast, and relatively cheap to buy, but cripplingly expensive to operate for the average driver. The annual and petrol taxation paid on a 4 litre 6 cylinder “Chrysler” built in U.K. would be the same as, or more than on a Rolls-Royce 25/30, but the car would be much cheaper to buy. There was certainly a clamp down on any car manufacture after the outbreak of the war, and dsl’s comment about using up stocks would apply. I realise that there are some holes in this argument, like 5 litre Straight 8s, but nonetheless the principle applies, and such cars would only find a used market with taxi firms or converted to trucks or ambulances. -- Last edit: 2021-01-02 00:28:57 |

It's also possible that Chrysler used up the 1939 front-end parts with their suddenly-old-fashioned composite headlights for export CKD kits well into 1940. |

A 1939 Chrysler Kew Six was also identified previously here in another movie. /vehicle_121255-Chrysler-Kew-Six-1939.html Therefore Chrysler Kew Six chosen to eliminate an unknown entry (if indeed they are visibly different?). Two 1939 Chrysler Wimbledon saloons found on the web and still registered in the UK but to date I've not found any Plymouth or Kew equivalents to compare for any minor styling changes like the finer chromed grille bars in the movie. -- Last edit: 2021-01-05 20:46:25 |

A 1936 Chrysler Motors UK brochure found on eBay confirms 'Chrysler Plymouth 6' as a UK assembled model for that year at least. Advertised as a five seater touring saloon (Kew and Richmond were six-seaters), the details are approximately as follows from the screen grabs. Engines: 6 cylinder side valve 2,790cc 19.6hp 6 cylinder side valve 3,300cc 23.4hp Models Available: 5-seater touring saloon, cloth upholstry 5-seater touring saloon, leather upholstry Despite a two-door version being shown there is nothing in the 'Specifications' page to confirm this was also sold in the UK. -- Last edit: 2021-01-06 12:30:11 |
