Extra large bumper guards should be 1973-1974.

In the movie, it is referred to as a '72 with a 4.9L engine. Obviously, movie dialog could mean nothing.

yep, choices in 1972 were 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8 or the 340 ( somewhere around 5.4/5.5 L )
340 is 5.6 finally

4.9L might be a Ford.. at least its what my grandfather had in his Econoline

Not sure why they had to shoot up a classic muscle car like this beauty and smash in the front end just for this short scene.
Just to go from his house to his workplace.
Could've just driven his BMW instead.

In technicality, both Hutch and Kowalski identify themselves as nobodies, so you're not just the only one who thought about vanishing point when viewing this movie. ;)

Clearly more than one was used, since in some shots it has the 1973-1974 bumper guards and in others it doesn't.

Some of the interior shots suggest that at least one was cut up into a process car, as well.

Incidentally, a hood up shot when his neighbor is first showing off the car shows red paint on the engine bay. It makes me wonder if at least one of the cars was also used in this recent chase in Hawkeye: /vehicle_1555020-Dodge-Challenger-1972.html

I've had a 71 challenger with a 5.9l v8 with a crusher 5spd and it was almost bullet proof well at least all the glass was and I wish I could buy that car and bring it home to Tennessee
