The model name was mentioned in the episode - it's a 4964F. Not built in Australia. Only 1983-1993 models were locally assembled, but this one is a later model due to the round headlights (the plate was issued in 1997). I believe this photo was taken in 1998. Pretty sure that back in the 90s these were built in Canada. This was the truck that was involved in the hit and run that killed an 8 year old boy in 1998: /vehicle.php?id=1397812 -- Last edit: 2024-10-30 01:42:39 |

I remembered the case; the truck had been involved in three other accidents after the Violet Town crash. Two occurred in South Australia and the third occurred in New South Wales. By the time the investigators had identified the driver, Brett Kilmore, the vehicle was in Queensland being repaired after the vehicle's latest crash in New South Wales. When the truck was being examined, investigators found a device designed to override the vehicle's speed limiter wired to the engine known as a "whizzer" hidden in a compartment in the sleeper cabin. At the time, the speed limiters fitted to all Western Star trucks were designed to limit the speeds of the trucks to 100km/h, since the vehicle was travelling at 106km/h at the point of impact with the Fleming Family's caravan, the investigators suspected that the whizzer was being used in the truck. After the trial, the case had highlighted an issue within the trucking industry where trucking companies and clients (in cases of independent drivers), are putting pressure on the drivers to make their deliveries on time, or they face penalties and the possible loss of business if the drivers are late with their deliveries. -- Last edit: 2026-03-06 17:06:58 |
