Looks like a [TE37] rather than a [TE27] |

Another angle showing a bit more of the front end. I'm quite sure this footage is from September, 1982 - Indiana auto workers took swings with sledgehammers for $1 per swing. This is the photo of the real event: ![]() |

2 different cars - film captures have vinyl roof/pillars and extra lights in grille. Archive pic doesn't, and looks basic spec. |

So were there two different protests where two different Corolla coupés were smashed up? |

Apparently so. I had just assumed that the archive photo was of the same smashing protest but taken later after the damage was done and the crowd had disbursed. |

Yes, they were common during auto plant strikes in the late 70s-early 80s, the auto unions blamed Japanese auto manufacturers of flooding the market with cheap full efficient cars during the oil crises, eroding the Big 3 market share. The Big 3 wanted concessions from the unions. The end result was voluntary quotas by the Japanese auto makers, which lead to most of them to open plants in the US. -- Last edit: 2019-11-18 02:25:50 |
