The 2500HD didn't start production until the 2001 model year, while the 2500 was around from the launch of the GMT800 platform. The easiest way to tell them apart is the grille and hood. The HD model has a thicker chrome bar as well as a power-dome hood, while the 2500 shares a grille and hood with the 1500 model.
