Yes, because these cars belong to their history. Seriously, about the topic classic cars Germany is still divided,even 29 years after The Wall was fallen. I imagine that being a used car dealer near the border in the months following the wall coming down was rather lucrative? Just the problem of getting rid of a load of Trabbis & Wartburgs the the East german's wanted to trade in? |

Not only official dealers, also private persons made money with selling used cars into the collapsed DDR. Still today many Ossis are pissed about that times, because very often they were fooled with overpriced wrecks. The Ossis didn't had realistic car prices. In the Ostzone used cars were grotesquely overpriced, plus the problems with their worthless curreny, named "Alu-Chips". The craziest time was after the 1.July 1990, when the D-Mark was introduced in the DDR. Within days, even hours, there were no used cars any more available in West Germany. None (except the orange K 70, which became my first car, bought at the 19.7.1990  )And the prices exploded. In the 80ies used cars were very cheap in West Germany. For a few hundred D-Mark you could catch roadworthy 1970ies clunkers. There was no trade-in of the old COMECON-clunkers. They were all crushed, or very common in these anarchistic months, just thrown into the forests or just abandoned on the streets. I remember the piles of hundreds of COMECON-cars on any junkyard also in the West (I lived not far away from the Iron Curtain). All junkyards were overfilled and the price for scrap metal collapsed, so you had to pay to get rid off an old clunker. I remember, that on my local wrecker nearby Hannover I've seen once the whole Wartburg 311/312 (except the Cabriolet) model range in just one pile of wrecks. P.S. a short time later -with the unification also the TÜV-check was introduced in the former DDR- the junkyards and illegal dumps became filled with Western wrecks - all the shitboxes the Ossis were fooled with A plenty of these clunkers didn't survive the TÜV-inspection. -- Last edit: 2018-08-03 17:30:37 |
