Car according to official period documentation was known simply as AR 51 'Matta' or AR 52 'Matta' (Matta not M Matta) depending on which version. However seems the 'Mattisti' always add '1900' designation presumably because of Matta chassis plates having 'Tipo 1900' on them so I'll go along with that. Though not 1900 M 'Matta' as some say that doesn't make much sense, simply 1900 'Matta'. http://www.ewillys.com/2014/06/11/1955-alfa-romeo-matta-brochure/ Link to "lh3.googleusercontent.com" Link to "www.picclickimg.com" -- Last edit: 2021-04-22 23:44:14 |

The correct denominations are Alfa Romeo tipo 1900 AR 51 or AR 52, where AR stays for Autovettura da Ricognizione (reconnaissance car/scout car). The tin plate that recalls the chassis and engine serial numbers shows two AR pairs, in this case the first stays for Alfa Romeo, the second for Autovettura da Ricognizione. First internal documents describe the car as "Camionetta (light truck) 1900 M, military purpose, while Italian Army identified it as Autovettura da Ricognizione 51, AR 51, as it was for the first Fiat Campagnola series. The nickname Matta (mad woman - Italian grammar has no neutral, only masculine or feminine, and car belongs to the second case) came when Alfa Romeo general manager Iginio Alessio saw the prototype jumping here and there on a tank training field, his reaction was: "That car is mad!". Hence the name later adopted also on official Alfa Romeo brochures. The more visible difference between AR 51 and AR 52 is the third rear tilting door, with the same height of the rest of the rear body edge, as in "Kurragömma" movie. -- Last edit: 2024-09-01 22:08:58 |
