Not just a 906, but a 906 Longtail or Lang Heck, which seems a rare beast used only for 1966 Le Mans and Hockenheim GP - https://www.stuttcars.com/porsche-models/906/lh/ . At Hockenheim, the 3 works entries were #1 Porsche 906 LH #152 Gerhard Mitter, winner overall and of both heats, registration: S-XR 760, colours: white (+yellow) #2 Porsche 906 LH #151 Günther Klass, 2nd overall, registration: S-XR 762, colours: white (+red) #3 Porsche 906 LH #153 Hans Herrmann, 3rd overall, registration: S-XR 761, colours: unknown |

Thanks a lot for this great research! Gerhard Mitter, Günther Klass- two great drivers that both ended so tragically. I had almost forgotten about them. Hans Herrmann, on the other hand, turned 90 this February. -- Last edit: 2018-05-18 23:35:30 |

- I sort of remember Mitter for his BMW F2 races, but didn't know he'd been killed in one at the Nürburgring. Klass was a new name for me. |

@Dsl: For me, it was a new name as well. I don't know why I hadn't heard or read about him so far as I mistakenly thought I knew about most of the fatal racing accidents of that time. This picture, however, says enough: http://www.okmugello.it/mugello/mori-gunther-klass-circuito @Mike962/Dsl: Surely their deaths were horrific, too, but why should I have mentioned them in this context of all things when Dsl was referring to a couple of other persons before? It therefore seemed only natural to concentrate on them as the starting point was actually just the cars shown on this picture. By not mentioning the other killed drivers of that generation I did not want to express any feeling of apathy or indifference. -- Last edit: 2018-05-22 18:32:57 |
