It is recognizeable by the flat front window, and the bulbous hood. In the US they are often called a flat screen Super Beetle. If the engine lid is original to the car it is a 1972, as the 1971 lid only has two sets of air slots. This particular car has had it's rear fenders and taillights replaced (1973 and later), and also the rear apron (1975 and later).

You got the picture. Something is fishy.

Looks like a 1972 VW 1200 sedan as there is no chrome trim strip (I'd rather call it pedestrian divider, Spoiler - click here to see it as it divides Happy's shoulder)
