Maybe it refers to those coins operated kiddie rides you see at the mall? It wouldn't surprise me that one could cost 5 cents in 1974, since you could also get candy for a nickel. |

I interpret it as the fact that the protagonist goes through the movie constantly worried that a hitman is out to get him, set in motion by his boss pushing a button on him, similar to how a ride starts by entering a coin into a slot and a button being pushed. |
