![]() 1970 made-for-TV comedy-drama about a hippie played by Jan-Michael Vincent, Private Adrian, who reluctantly enlists in the Marines and has to contend with Drill Sergeant Drake, played by Darren McGavin. Despite their opposing worldviews, both men find understanding in each other due to Adrian's skill as a natural leader, much to the dislike of Drake's superior, Chief Drill Instructor Master Sergeant Frank DePayster, played by Earl Holliman. This film notably aired on the 195th anniversary of the founding the United States Marine Corps (USMC), established November 10th, 1775. The casting of the two leads is quite ironic, as Darren McGavin was medically disqualified from service during World War II while Jan-Michael Vincent had been enlisted in the Army for several years at the time of filming. That being said, McGavin's performance as a drill sergeant is very well done. Stark contrast to his role as The Old Man from A Christmas Story! Airdate: November 10th, 1970. -- Last edit: 2025-08-16 19:48:34 |
