Canadian film set in India in 1947, filmed partly in India but mostly in Canada for financial and tax reasons.

The lead actress is Kristin Kreuk, also chosen for Canadian content reasons:
Citation it never fails to amaze me how nobody ever mentions the most important reason(s) for casting like this... the producers needed to cast a Canadian citizen or permanent resident in order to get certified as a Canadian production. without this certification the film would not have received government funding from Canadian federal and provincial subsidies and most definitely would not have been made. this is also why a movie that takes place completely in India and Pakistan needed to be at least 75% shot in Canada. as it happens, there are no bankable South Asian-Canadian women actors, and, even more problematic, virtually no decent actors from the South Asian community in Canada, 'known' or 'unknown'... KK was deemed suitably 'ethnic' and has a decent-sized following on account of her TV show "Smallville". thus, she is cast as Naseem. similarly, Neve Campbell (Canadian) plays an Anglo-Indian woman in the movie.
