1979 made-for-TV sports comedy remake about Jackie Robinson "J.R." Cooper, a kid who loves baseball and is also the son of a former major leaguer, now a down-on-his-luck snack vendor working the stands at games for the San Diego Padres. Said former major player begins secretly relaying tips and messages to the players to improve their game through his nine-year-old son, played by legendary African-American child actor Gary Coleman in his film debut! Playing his father is prolific actor Robert Guillaume. However, this plan goes awry when he finds himself having to deal with a social worker so overzealous that she makes the one in the King of the Hill pilot look competent. The social worker subplot is completely superfluous and thankfully absent from the original film. I would love to know who thought it was necessary and why.
Actual members of the Padres' 1979 roster appear, including Dave Winfield (star outfielder and future Hall of Famer), Ozzie Smith, Gene Tenace, Rollie Fingers, and Gaylord Perry!

This movie also has a very eye-catching opening credits sequence that was animated entirely using an LED videoboard!
