Supposed to be in 1909. |

It is my understanding that the cars in the movie were manufactured for the movie. If you look close, they have differentials, something not used in cars from that time. I was told that they had Pinto engines in them. The cars were modeled after a 1907 Reo Model A Touring, with one exception. The real Reo was a Tonneau with the rear seat and doors that were removable so it could be used as a hauler. (Milk cans, etc.) I suspect that the Tonneau was lost and the original Reo car that was copied was fitted with similar era rear seat without doors. (Possibly a 1905 Cadillac Model F rear seat.) There were three replica cars produced. One was destroyed making the movie. I think one was banging around southern California back in the late 1990s. And the last one I heard the Wayne family (John Wayne) still owned. The original Reo was owned by Pacific rentals, which was a prop company that was owned Wayne family. I acquired the 1907 Reo about twenty years ago from the guy that bought it from Pacific Rentals. It still has the wrong back seat which I've chosen not to correct because of the movie connection. The original car only had a brief cameo role in the movie when Big Jake's grandson was hiding next to it in the barn. |

I was told that the REO was in a museum. I was searching for it when I found this website. I was thrilled to see your post. I thought my dad could clear a few things up for you. My dad, Howard Jensen, built the 4 REO's in Big Jake back in the early 70’s in Sepulveda, California in just 5 weeks. He was the special effects coordinator on that movie and many others with John Wayne. The cars were a cross between a 2 cylinder and 4 cylinder. The reason being is that in the movie several Texas Rangers had to fit in the car (not enough room in the 2 cylinder). The back seat came from the 4 cylinder. It was modeled after the 1908 REO, not 1907. He remembers one car went over the cliff and was blown up, and the other cars were converted in the movie called Oklahoma Crude. He thinks one became a pickup, one a touring and the other a 2 seater. The last he knew, Pat Wayne was the owner of one REO. About the motorcycle, he said that the stunt driver chose the Montessa because it was lighter and the Harley Davidson wasn’t available. I know nothing about cars but if there’s anything you’d like to know about your REO. I will certainly find out. It sure was a great memory for myself and the neighborhood when it was being built. |

Anyone know what the Motorbike was? |

The "goofs" section of the imdb.com page for Big Jake discusses what the motorcycle is supposed to look like and what it actually is. |

The goof section has also goofed, it describes the bike as twin cylinder, it isn't (isn't even twin port). Zooming in really close, I think it's a Cappra engine (250 or 360), different crankcase covers to the Cota/Impala/Scorpion engine. |

Thanks for the information on the REOs. To my untutored eye they looked like 1909 Model D Touring cars. https://heritagemuseumsandgardens.org/automobile/1909-reo/ |
