2007 English-German docu-drama about the sinking of the RMS Lusitania on May 7th, 1915 at the hands of the German U-boat U-20 which fired torpedoes, the second being fired while survivors were being evacuated. The Lusitania was headed for Southampton and was struck at the Irish coast. There were warnings published in newspapers that the Lusitania was liable to attack. The docu-drama's explanation for the attack was the Lusitania changed direction and began unknowingly heading towards U-20, resulting in them firing upon what they knew was a non-hostile vessel. While survivors were being evacuated from the stricken ship, a second torpedo was fired, hitting the engine room and delivering the killing blow. The attack resulted in Germany and The Kaiser receiving worldwide outrage and condemnation, with rioters in England destroying German-owned shops, the New York Times devoting an entire edition to the disaster and featuring photos of mass graves, and the Kaiser being called a murderer and a butcher, all according to this movie. Germany was also struck from lists of civilized nations and since 1'198 of the 1'959 onboard were killed, a very tragic number which included 94 children and infants, this only fueled the anger and rage that Germany's enemy nations were already feeling towards the country as a result of the war and also resulted in the United States eventually joining the war as 128 of the dead were American citizens. One scene also shows the commander of U-20 being reprimanded by a superior officer for turning so much of the world against Germany while also being told that he is lucky to keep his rank. Please note that the above information is all taken from this docu-drama and that some artistic license may have be taken.

One notable individual incensed by the atrocity was rising American animator and tabloid cartoonist Windsor McCay who, along with his assistants, spent 22 months painstakingly recreating the sinking of the Lusitania in a 12-minute animated documentary, simultaneously the first of it's kind and the longest animated work made up to that point. It debuted in 1918, but was not successful.

I was unsure of what title to add for this movie; the imdb result on google says "Sinking of the Lusitania: Terror at Sea" but the imdb page proper says "Lusitania: Murder on the Atlantic" so that's the one I went with. Also, as this was a co-production between two countries and the site only allows one flag to be selected, I left it blank.

Set from May 1st to June 15th, 1915
Airdate: May 12th, 2007
