The one used for the chase with the Ford F-350 tow truck had a different grille:

If you look closely at the writing on the window, it identifies this as a 1983 model:

1987 or 1988 Olds Custom Crusier

It was an '87, or at least it had a new hood installed as a part of the storyline in the movie, and on the hood there was a wax pen mark "'87" that is commonly used by bodyshop guys to keep track of inventory.

The front header panel and grille are from an '83 Delta 88. '87-'90 Custom Cruisers had the "bright" grille from the '82 Ninety-Eight with a chromed center post. I'm pretty sure this is an '83 Custom Cruiser as they did share the Delta 88's front clip from '80-'85. And as for the hood, an '87 hood will fit on an '83.

That was a cool car until they F'ed it up.

I though the wax pen mark said "88 Olds" it was great car. and the Custom Crusier was the last car to use the Olds 307

this custom cruiser has to be a 1986 or newer because if you look at the ford fairmont picture in the general lineup for lethal weapon 2 you can see a center mounted signal lamp on the custom cruiser, which was mandated by the government for all us vehicles after the 1985 model year.

Ok, but the grille still came from an '83.

there were two used: some scenes it has the rear shoulder belts but not in others, the grill also changes

The car was fine until Riggs got behind the wheel! After that, the car was practically falling apart!

I used to always get confused when they were mentioning it was a brand new car, but now that I think of it, didn't they make those until 1990 (and then the new rounded wagon for 91-92?)

The Chevy wagons also used the Olds 307 for some reason.

The car in the picture has a 1983 grille and should, in my opinion, be classified as such. The other car that is being used in this movie appears to be a a 1982 Custom Cruiser. This one, however, is a 1983.

I remember Roger's son saying this was a brand new car after he brought it back home damaged. The movie was made in 1989, so it had to be a 1988 or 1989?

Curiously, the second to the last thumbnail provided by Ford_Guy at the first line of comments shows that it has the CHSML on the rear door

Looks like the producers bought up a collection of at least three Cruisers for the movie, maybe more... The grills seem to change, and indicate earlier models like 1983's, but there is also the highmounted center stop light, and the chrome trim on the sail panels (C-pillars) behind the rear doors... Custom Cruisers did not get chrome sail panels until 1988. :) At least they got the color right. :)

The grille shots shown on here are from a 1982, not a 1983 Custom Cruiser. The 1983 Grille had more on an egg crate type pattern. Keep in mind, all 1980-90 Custom Cruiser's have interchangable body panels, so don't go by years shown on the replacement parts. The rear end shot shows a CHMSL which suggests that it is 1986 or newer, however, all 1986+ Custom Cruisers used a full chrome grille unlike this movie car. There are also some shots that show the chrome c-pillar trim, which suggests 1988 or newer. This same car has the 1982 grille though. Then there are some shots without the C-pillar trim and the same 1982 Grille. If there is a shot showing rear shoulder belts, they came in in 1989.

My guess is they used two cars, one an older one (likely a 1982 Custom Cruiser) and one later one, a 1988-89 with a 1982 grille and front end. Perhaps this is one case when they tried to be consistant with the cars by putting the old grille on the newer car. Regardless, this should be changed at least to 1982 to reflect the grille, or to 1988-89 to reflect the trim and CHMSL (in some shots). The only consistant thing is the 1982 grille on all cars (at least on the photos included).

Here is a 1982 Oldsmobile Brochure showing the grille from the movie car:

Here is a 1983 Custom Cruiser, clearly with a different grille pattern:

Actually, now that I rewatch the one chase scene on Youtube, there is one scene where the car on the bridge has a 1983 Grille. I also noticed that a couple of the interios shots showed rear shoulder belts, which would be a 1989. Through the majority of the movie it seems to be the 1982 grille, on the newer body, most likely a 1989.

I'd say that it should be listed as a 1988-1989 model with a 1982 grill as a afterthought.

Trish Murtaugh's car, although only Roger Murtaugh(or Martin Riggs) is seen driving it.

Yes,man. To revive in brochures at lov2xlr8.no. After all it is an 87 Olds Cusatom Cruiser wagon. Hiliarous stats for the sequel. Murtaugh deserved to drive another Delta 88 sedan as in the original, as far as I know.

In what seems like a plot hole, it was never explained why Roger/Martin use a station wagon and his wife's as a police car with siren and radio, I found it curious that a policeman or any detective can drive his own car as happens in Hawaii 5-0 with the camaro or Bad Boys or also with Texas Ranger instead of using a cruiser assigned by the P.D.
