This is a Bentley Special 4 1/4 liter 'streamline' saloon, coachwork by Park Ward, of 1936. It had a steel framed body. Only four were built to this style, which differed from the standard model by having a 'swept' tail with flush boot (trunk) and a side mounted spare wheel. Three of the four cars survive and I owned one of them (B83HM, built July- November 1936) from 1979 until 1998. When new, these fine cars could reach (though not sustain!) 96mph and 0- 50mph in 10.6 seconds. That may seem slow today, but it was supercar performance in 1936. On one occasion we attended a large classic car rally in Torquay, UK, and on the way there we encountered many other 'lesser' pre- war cars proceeding to the same rally. With five people aboard plus luggage the Bentley swept past them all with imperious ease- still the mast of her peers decades after she was built.
