Strange system. DeLuxe means the lowest trim available... |

It was a sort of snobbery so that you never had to admit to the neighbours that you had the bottom rung on the ladder. And there was often a totally basic version which only sold to fleets, and was used for police/fire service etc. So probably incorrect to call this a Deluxe - but this grille was only used on basic and Deluxe - Super upwards had different patterns. |

IIRC that grille was used on the 1100cc cars, the 1300 s had vertical bars, and the Maxi engined cars something more elaborate. |

It mixed trim and engine permutations. Basic/Deluxe came with 1100 or 1300 and had horizontal, Super Deluxe 1300 had vertical - no 1100 Super Deluxe offered. All 1500 and 1750 (including 1500 Super Deluxe) had black plastic hexagons. Then from May 75 Allegro Mk2 onwards, everything got black plastic hexagons. |

Not many basic ones about then. I remember doing a clutch on a 1300 Allegro, with Dad, so it must have been pre 1982, we hired a puller from the local accessories shop but the clutch wouldn't move, so we tightened the puller up with a long piece of scaffold tube on the socket t-bar, and cut out the louvres from inside the front wing so that we could belt the puller with a lump hammer. The clutch freed off with a loud bang, but the puller was banana shaped when we'd finished and Dad had an argument with the bloke at the hire shop about getting the deposit back. Happy days! -- Last edit: 2015-03-21 15:50:06 |
