Quote Gierek had invested nearly 1 billion dollars into a project of developing a modern Massey Ferguson model of tractor at Ursus, however due to licensing problems, these tractors could not be sold in the West, and could not be sold in the East because they were too expensive. Instead of the targeted production of 75,000 tractors per year, only 500 were produced.

It isn't entirely true, the license derived tractors were later produced in big numbers, but indeed - in the very early 80s, the new leadership of the communist party (succesors of Gierek & co) paused for a few years the license project and later didn't back to its orignal shape. But of course it is the most easy and fashionable to blame Gierek on everything. Popular especially among the 80s, Jaruzelski era's, commies, who didn't do anything for the state industry (except that turned it into a sort of "museum") - this way they try to camouflage own indolence and primitivism.

Now I learn from the Polish Wikipedia that Ursus kept the MF 235 in production until 2009, although it was renamed Ursus 2812 and the original Perkins engine was replaced with a homegrown one (unless the Ursus engine was just a clone of the Perkins one).
