I think it's early 81-83 high spec 1.0 HLE or 1.3 HLS - has rear wipe and chrome side strip, but no spoiler on rear window and possibly no tints. I guess Mini safer than Austin, but local name may vary. |

No - it's a higher piece of metal trim, not stick-on tape. Never seen a Metro Kilt before (not sold in UK), but interesting that the photo has Austin badge. |

The Kilt and Super Kilt were cheap trim levels of the Austin Metro, they had 'Tartan look' interiors. They were sold in Italy in 1987 and 1988. In fact, the Metro in the pic is an earlier version. |

I think it was simply a reference to the type of interior tissues. From 1985 to 1989 was also marketed in Italy an Austin Metro Tweed. ![]() |

The coherence between Volkswagen and US-miner's clothes isn't obvious either: /vehicle.php?id=440642 ![]() Maybe BL had this idea with this special edition, because Scotland and typical Scottish items had a much better reputation in Continental Europe than English-associated industrial products -especially cars- back then, in the 70ies and 80ies ![]() I remember articles in German motor magazines of that years with the headings "Britisch Elend" (Elend = misery) and "Kritisch Leyland" (kritisch = here it means "crucial", not "critical") |

I always understood that the (mini)Metro was originally intended to replace the twenty-year-old Mini; but, although the Metro was popular, the Mini was still selling too well to withdraw. When the miniMetro became the Metro I've been unable to find out. |

I think it was around 1982 that the Mini part was dropped. My late grandmother had a 1982 Metro HLE for many years and I don't remember it having miniMetro on the rear. |
