740 Diesel would have been closer to reality. |

in 1991 probably yes |

What, do you think showing such an old car makes Finland look a little backward? You still see old cabs around though, there are still plenty of LTI/Austin FX4s being used in England. |

It reminds me the movie The Truth About Charlie, which was made in France but where all the taxis are old cars (R16, 604, DS, 403). |

I saw this movie some time ago, and then already I wundered about the age of the cars they used, what to think about the Italian Fiat 128 as a Taxi, can we take that seriously? It is not only as old as the 144, but it is also rather small for a taxi.... |

No, of course it's more symphatic than some newer car, but these Volvos disappeared from taxi use well before 1980s, typical Finnish taxi is no more than 5 years old, and during this time, most likely either Volvo 740 or Mercedes W124. |

You have to remember Jim Jarmusch is a very artsy, independant filmmaker, maybe he preferred to have older cars to match his quirky characters (elfin Winona Ryder can barely see over the steering wheel of her massive Chevy Caprice, Isaach De Bankole plays a bit of a loser hence the knackered car, the Finnish taxi driver is very hard done by in life, maybe putting him in a brand new Volvo or Mercedes would undermine that and the Roberto Benigni character is a complete nutcase) even if in the segments set in America he used conventional American taxis. So what cars were used as regular taxis in Paris and Rome in 1991? The main thing is taxis do enormous milages so you couldn't have one that was too old. -- Last edit: 2006-07-22 17:50:23 |

I don't know about Rome, but Paris most likely would be Citroën BX/CX/XM, Peugeot 305/405/505/605, Renault 9/21/25..... |

In the Paris of early 90's, the 505 peugeot was still a great star, but they were leaving the country for the African continent. The end of an era, more than 30 years of Indenor-Diesel RWD Peugeot...(thanks for our lung anyway!) |

in Belgium taxis are usually Mercedes-Benz (and some say that Mercedes-Benz are usually taxis ) |

I don't live in London or go there very often but I believe the classic FX4, last produced as the LTI Fairway until 1997, is still used by many cabbies and the car is very much associated with London, as much as the Routemaster red buses, and the car is used (though less ubiquitous) in many other British cities. However it is less of a presence and most cabbies today have the TX1 and the TXII and others use ordinary family cars and MPVs. Eventually the FX4/Fairway will be phased out completely like the Checker Marathon has in NYC. -- Last edit: 2006-07-22 18:05:10 |

The Mercedes V-Class is a good taxi, also popular (outside of London) is the Nissan Primera and the Peugeot 406. |

In Reading the FX4 is still everywhere, and the Ford Granda/Scorpio and Vauxhall Omega are still the kings of minicabs! |

It could be a private taxi. I remember a few years ago we used to have a privatly owned taxi company that drove around in an old Lumina, Astro, and Ciera. |
