![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() Can be seen in a few scenes featuring Parky, the police officer on Harold Shand's payroll. Although everyone refers to this car as an Austin Princess, technically it was a Leyland Princess. See this wikipedia article: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leyland_Princess -- Last edit: 2009-11-25 23:11:00 |

The author of that wikipedia article is wrong. There was no Leyland car except the Australian Leyland P76 (http://www.webtrade.com.au/p76/) and some pre-war cars, among them the Leyland 8 (http://www.hartlana.co.uk/bsarchive/fx040027.htm) which actually is a Leyland-Thomas and about 18 cars build 1920-22 competing with Rolls-Royce. In the rest of the world 'Leyland' was only used for trucks, busses and tanks. The 'Wedge' [ADO71] started as the 18-22 series under the brand names Austin, Morris and Wolseley in the spring of 1975. Six month later the three brand names were removed and only a single brand name was used since: 'Princess'. The corporation that owned this and other brand names was British Leyland, a national company at that time. British Leyland and the 'L' logo appeared on most, if not all, publications of that time and they used the term 'Leyland Cars' to promote the various brands (Austin, Daimler, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mini, Morris, MG, Princess, Rover, Triumph, Vanden Plas: http://austin-rover.co.uk/brochures/3244_01.jpg). It is a name like today's 'DaimlerChrysler', 'PSA Peugeot Citroën' or 'Volkswagen AG'. Still you wouldn't call the latest Bugatti or Lamborghini a Volkswagen! ![]() The car in the image has vinyl on the C-column only and black side mirrors which were part of the facelift in 1978 when the 1800 cc four cylinder engine was replaced by the 1700 and 2000, while the six cylinder 2200 was kept in production. Since that time the car is called 'Princess 2'. The trim level is, as far as I can see, HL. Unluckily all engine sizes were available with that trim level. Therefore we have to stick to 'Princess 2' only. |
